Getting started
Do you offer private surf lessons in Indian Rocks Beach?
Yes. All surf lessons are held privately for your party so that you won’t be placed in a class with strangers. This gives your instructor time to focus on your goals, experience level, and progress throughout the lesson.
Do you offer beginner surf lessons?
Yes, most of our students start taking classes with us as beginners. No previous surfing experience is necessary. We love to introduce students to the fundamentals, help them get comfortable in the water, and guide them step by step throughout their lesson.
What ages can take surf lessons?
We teach children, teens, and adults, as well as families and private groups. Let us know the ages and experience levels of everyone participating when you inquire, so we can recommend the best lesson setup for your party.
Can families or different experience levels learn together?
Yes, our private lesson structure allows each student to receive individual attention based on their experience level. We typically provide one instructor for every two to three students, depending on your group’s needs. Tell us a little about your group, and we’ll help plan a lesson that keeps everyone together while making sure each student feels supported and challenged appropriately.
Your first lesson
How long is a surf lesson?
Surf lessons are 60 minutes and are scheduled by appointment.
What equipment is included?
We provide your surfboard and leash. We recommend bringing sunscreen, drinking water, and a towel. A comfortable swimsuit is suitable for most lessons, as local water temperatures are generally warm for much of the year.
Will I catch waves during my first lesson?
Most beginners begin catch multiple rides in their first class with their instructor’s assistance, pushing them into waves! Conditions and individual progress vary, so standing up isn’t guaranteed. We’ll help you build the fundamentals and make progress at your own pace.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Students should be comfortable in the water. Lessons are generally taught in beginner-appropriate shallow water, but water comfort and swimming ability still matter. If you’re unsure whether a lesson is a good fit, tell us about your swimming ability before booking so we can discuss appropriate options.
Is one lesson enough, or should I book several?
One lesson is a great way to try surfing if you’re looking for a memorable experience. If your goal is to become more independent and build confidence with paddling, wave selection, navigating lineups, and surfing fundamentals, we generally recommend about 3–6 lessons. Multi-session options also offer better value, and we’re happy to help you decide what makes sense for your goals.
Location & local surf
Where do lessons take place?
Our primary lesson location is at Indian Rocks Beach, at the 8th Avenue Public Beach Access. We’ll provide exact meeting instructions once your reservation is confirmed.
How far are you from Clearwater Beach?
Indian Rocks Beach is approximately 15–20 minutes south of Clearwater Beach, depending on traffic. We welcome locals and visitors staying around Clearwater Beach, Belleair Beach, St. Pete/Clearwater, Tampa Bay and the surrounding Pinellas County areas.
Can you really surf on the Gulf Coast?
Yes. Tampa Bay’s Gulf Coast can be a great place to learn to surf. Our waves are often smaller and less intimidating than what you may encounter on the Atlantic, giving beginners more opportunity to focus on balance, timing, paddling, and building confidence in the water. Lessons are typically held close to shore over a sandy bottom in beginner-friendly conditions.
Surf & weather
What happens if the conditions aren’t suitable?
We monitor local surf and weather conditions before every lesson. Light rain doesn’t always prevent a class, but if the surf is too small or conditions are unsafe, we’ll contact you with the best options. Depending on the conditions, we may adjust the lesson, offer another activity, or reschedule for a better day.
When will you confirm the conditions?
We check in with you about two hours before your lesson to let you know if any adjustments are needed.
Booking & lesson options
How do I book a lesson?
Submit a lesson availability request through our online booking form.
We’ll follow up to learn more about your group and scheduling preferences, then help you choose the best lesson option and available time.
Once everything is confirmed, we’ll send you a personalized booking link to secure your reservation.
Can I buy now and schedule later?
Yes. You can purchase lesson credit now and schedule your class later. Credits are valid for two years and can also be purchased as gifts.
How much do surf lessons cost?
Rates vary based on the number of students and whether you’re booking a single lesson or multiple sessions. Submit an availability request, and we’ll recommend the best option for your group. Discounted rates are available when multiple lessons are booked upfront.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for weekends, holidays, and popular vacation periods. Booking ahead gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date and time.
Last-minute availability does occasionally open up, so you’re still welcome to reach out if your plans come together closer to your preferred date.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
All purchases are final. If you need to reschedule due to an emergency or uncooperative weather or surf conditions, your deposit can be applied to a new lesson date at no additional charge. Credits are valid for two years, and any remaining balance is due on the day of your lesson.
Still Have a Question?
Tell us who you’re hoping to get in the water and when you’ll be in town. We’ll help you choose the lesson option that makes the most sense for your group.
